Your Questions Answered

What’s the difference between SSDI and SSI?

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) is based on work history and Social Security contributions. It provides financial benefits to individuals with a qualifying disability or blindness that prevents them from working.

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is available to individuals with limited income/resources, regardless of their work history. The program provides benefits to individuals who are blind, have a disability, or are 65 years of age or older.

The amount of time it takes to obtain disability benefits in Florida can vary depending on a number of factors, including the severity of your condition, whether you have an existing approved disability claim, and the resources available to your lawyers for SSDI. It may be possible to obtain benefits within months, but it can also take a year or longer.

There is no requirement that you have a lawyer to apply for disability benefits (SSI/SSDI) in Florida, but having one can increase your chances of success. Good disability lawyers in Florida will be familiar with the process and requirements, and can help you navigate the system. If your claim is denied, a lawyer can also represent you at an appeal hearing.

Our Florida Social Security attorneys are intimately familiar with the system and understand that claims are often denied on the initial application. We know what to do next:

  • Review your case
  • Gather additional evidence
  • Represent you at hearings to fight for the benefits you’re entitled to receive

You may be able to earn a limited income while receiving benefits. We can explain the rules and how they apply to your case.

There are no upfront costs for disability lawyers in Florida. Many attorneys work on a contingency basis, which means they only receive a portion of the back pay and future benefits their client is awarded.

James was searching for equipment for painting at Home Depot. In the aisle next to him, there was a worker on a lift stocking the highest shelf. The worker pushed boxes so far across the shelf that they fell off the other edge and hit James in the head. The force almost knocked James unconscious. He sat down and the loud bang got the worker off the ladder to see what fell. When they saw James they offered him a bucket and made a report. James did not recall leaving the store or how he got home. He did not recall much except being at home depot and getting hit in the head. Home Depot told him that it was a small box of dust masks that hurt him. We discovered it was actually a large box of emergency kits that fell off the shelf.
